The calm consulting practice.

A consulting engagement runs in email, not in a project tool. By March the threads are the only record of what anybody agreed to. The parts here follow one engagement in order. The proposal request that lands on a Tuesday from a name you half recognize. The scoping call that leaves nothing behind unless you put it there. The statement of work that wants to split into four threads. The update that takes an hour the first time and ten minutes after. The action item nobody closed. The approval you've asked for eight times without writing a chase. And the renewal that arrives as a cc. Each part ends where the next begins, and each turns on the same small decision: what to put in writing now, so the next email is a short one.

  1. 01

When a proposal request lands in your inbox

Four lines from a name you half recognize, on an ordinary Tuesday. What is reliable in it, the subject line you will live with until March, and the reply that goes out before lunch.
  2. 02

Turning a scoping call into next steps

An hour of talking leaves nothing behind unless you put it there. What the note after a scoping call has to carry, and the step in it you cannot see.
  3. 03

Keeping the SOW conversation on one email thread

A statement of work splits into four threads before anybody signs it. What breaks a thread, what belongs on its own, and the record you are left holding.
  4. 04

The client update that takes ten minutes

The first one takes an hour and sets the terms. Every one after it is an edit. Who it goes to now the contract thread is finished, and what to send in a week when nothing has shipped.
  5. 05

The action item email, and what holds it

An action item rarely fails at the writing down. It fails in the weeks after. Where they come from, what closes one, and the three ways one ends.
  6. 06

    Chasing the approval without nagging

You have asked eight times without once sitting down to write a chase. What the repetition actually does, and the four moves that are not another message.
  7. 07

Spotting the renewal before anybody mentions it

The next engagement opens in your inbox as a cc, a forward, or a question about February. What the signals look like, how to test one, and what to write back on the day.
